A middle school lesson for this teacher…Wow!

images-10

A couple of weeks ago I was asked by one of my 8th grade students to be the adult sponsor of a student led Bible club.   This group wanted to meet before school once a week, but they needed an adult sponsor.  I joyfully accepted! There is nothing more exciting than Jesus…but kids wanting to learn more about Jesus and the Bible is pretty amazing. 🙂

Today was our first day.  It was so very encouraging!!!  Twelve 7th and 8th graders showed up and when asked why, most said “they want to know more about the Bible!” Wow! These kids are in middle school.  They are in the thick of it…for the record, I would never want to go back to those days…middle school is tough.  Tougher these days than in mine by far!

Each student vocalized their desire to pray and to start the day off right.  Again, wow! From the mouths of babes…to start the day off right. 🙂  I can already tell I will learn from this wonderful group of guys and girls.  God will be using them…I have no doubt!

How many of us take time to do what they are wanting to do and start the day off right with God’s word?  God even suggests doing so in His word:

Mark 1:35

“Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight,

He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed”

Psalm 5:3

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;

In the morning I will direct it to You,

And I will look up”

Psalm 63:1

“O God, You are my God;

Early will I seek You;

My soul thirsts for You;

My flesh longs for You

In a dry and thirsty land

Where there is no water”

How wise are these young ones? Very wise!   Read on:  One conversation we had this morning was trying to have a positive impact on others throughout the day.  I encouraged them to help each other do so.  I asked them how many of them had a Facebook page.  Then I asked them what happened on Facebook and one of them answered  – ‘drama!’  Another chimed in – ‘lots of drama!’  At this point, I shared with them that one of my ways to be positive is to try to encourage others through scripture on Facebook.  Daily I post scripture from my devotional.  The word of God lifts me up and helps me start my day off great…as the kids’ say.

One of my scriptures this morning was:

Psalm 107.19-20

19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

20 He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.

The devotion that went with it talked about how His word heals as it states in verse 20.  How many of us and how many of today’s youth are hurting and need a touch of heaven?  We can all have it through the healing that comes from His word.  These kids are reaching out and wanting to know more.  They are going through things I can’t even imagine…and God can bring healing!

Will you pray with me for these kids? Will you also take time to look around you and see how you can bless someone today?  We live in a world of ‘drama’…again in the kids’ words…so let’s help each other by being positive and shining His light. Let’s help by pointing them to the HEALING Word of God!

I can…ONLY imagine!

We are currently traveling back from a glorious birthday weekend with my side of our wonderful family. The Lord has truly blessed Mike and me with an amazing family on both sides.  The Taylor clan and the Newsom clan are collectively the best group of people ever! I am biased but I would venture to say others would say the same. 🙂  Thank you Lord for surrounding my with people who love me unconditionally and make me a better person!!! (Thanks to my niece Lane we had amazing photos taken of the Taylor side in Indy by Courtney Venable….it was GREAT fun!)

547411_476141569119203_972956558_n 902118_476146905785336_1918125744_oI love these people more than words could EVER describe!!!

Now to the real reason for this post…as we are driving down the interstate we are listening to Christian music.  Mike and I both are listening and singing along.  (For those of you who have heard both of us sing…you know HE is way better and I need to be listening and not singing. LOL!)  I CAN ONLY IMAGINE just played.  What a powerful song!!!  I will NEVER forget the first time I heard this song!

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE…Mercy Me

I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk
By your side

I can only imagine
What my eyes will see
When your face
Is before me
I can only imagine

[Chorus:]
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine

I can only imagine
When that day comes
And I find myself
Standing in the Son

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine

[Chorus]

I can only imagine [x2]

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever, forever worship you

What is so fitting for God’s timing in letting me hear and remember this is that I heard it first on a long run when I hadn’t been running long.  I was doing a long training run around White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas.  I was training for my first marathon.  At that time I was overtaken with emotion thinking about how I will respond when I meet our Lord and Savior.  I remember praising HIM with every step and being in awe of His saving grace when in NO way I deserved it!!

Never did I dream that some 13 years later I would be approaching my 9th marathon and it would be Boston.  I could truly only imagine that then.  Now, He has made it reality! As tears fill my eyes now, my emotion is real and raw.  God loves us so much He wants to show us things we can only imagine. He wants to help us live for Him in a way that glorifies Him and brings us joy! WOW!

Why me?? Why now??? Age? Wisdom? Faith? Commitment? Failure? Hard work? Hard ache? It is a combination of them all. I can honestly tell you that I do not want to do it any other way!!! He is the way. He is the truth.  He is the light! He is LIFE!!!!  The ups and downs of life are doable because He is ALWAYS by my side!!! He is a friend of mine!!! (another song playing now!)

The Lord knew 13+ years ago He would be leading on this journey.  He knew He would be paving the way for me to run and use running as a huge part of my testimony.  He knew I would have heartache and success along the way.  He knew I would be running Boston once and now twice.  He knew He would be taking a non-athlete to heights only HE could take reach.  I am in NO way a natural.  He gives me a drive that truly comes from Him.  He gives me the desire to finish what I started and finish well!

1 Corinthians 9.24

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way to get the prize.

2 Timothy 4.7

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

As Casting Crowns sings, “You are already there!”  He goes before us.  He is paving the way from Hopkinton to Boston. He knows what will happen on April 15. He is waiting!

Deuteronomy 31.8

the Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

He knows what April 15, 2013 holds.  He knows how He will use it for His glory.  My prayer is that I stay true to Him and give it right back to Him every step of the way!!!  This brings me comfort and confidence as I prepare to taper this week and physically and mentally prepare for the big day.

Over this next week, my goal is to immerse myself in Him and truly praise him over the 26 easy miles that lead me to HIS 26.2 on April 15.  Will you join me? Will you help me pray that He keeps me injury free, that He leads me every step of the way and that He helps me run for Him?  God is so good! All things truly work together.  Because of HIM I run! Running Blessed!!!

Romans 8.28

And we know that in ALL things God works for the good of those who love him,

who have been called according to HIS purpose.

Runner’s Passport – I am all in! Are you ALL IN?

IMG_4820

Three weeks from today is the BIG day! I am all in for Boston.  As I think about the phrases – ALL IN and Runner Passport – I think about what that means to me.  It means I will be taking part of the big dance on April 15 in Boston – the 2013 Boston Marathon. Wow! How exciting! I know I have done it before…but it is all so new once again. 🙂  I love it!

It also has me thinking about my salvation.  It reminds me of the BIG day – the day I became part of our Lord’s family – June 11, 1978.  This is the day I received the most important passport ever – my passport to eternity.  At the age of 9 I could say “I am ALL IN!” Now that’s exciting.

The best part about this passport is that anyone can be ALL IN.  You don’t have to qualify.  You don’t have to train by running 60 miles a week.  All you have to do is say “YES, Lord, YES! I believe you are my Lord and Savior and I want you in my heart. I have sinned and I know you died for me and by GRACE you have saved me.”    God loves us! He wants us to have the JOY that surpasses any joy we could have on this earth!

1 John 5:11-13

11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

Boston is exciting for me…a dream that once was thought unattainable…now a reality! But eternal life is even more so…EXCITING doesn’t even touch it!  Earlier today I posted this in response to the amount of mileage I am putting in during this point of my training (55-60 miles a week):

Anyone of you could do it…I have NO doubt…it is about a goal and a dream. The author is our Lord and He helps you do things we could only imagine… He is helping me fly.  I started with one foot…1 step and 1 mile at a time.

He can help you do anything…He is our Savior.  He is the one that can help you be ALL IN! He can give you a passport to eternity…All you have to do is have faith and believe!

Romans 3:23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 1:12

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Boston training update:

2013 Mileage – 610.67 miles – I will hit 750 on marathon day! Thank you LORD! For His glory!!!

2013 shoes – On 3rd pair of Brooks Adrenaline

2013 Longest run – 16 miles with next one being 26.2 on April 15, 2013

Fundraising: About $200 short of $5000 goal – I know we will get there! 🙂

Marathon training plan – Hanson’s Marathon Method – working well! The Lord is helping me rock my training.

Praying that on marathon day it all comes together…but major prayer is that HIS perfect will is done on that day and the remaining 3 weeks of training!

This post is dedicated to my father, Frank Taylor.  Today is his 76th birthday.  He, along with my mom, showed us what it meant to live a life with Christ.  His devotion to the Lord and his life serving others for Christ is one I want to emulate.  Thank you dad for introducing me to Christ and helping me understand what it means to be ALL IN with Christ. LYNMW!

Pacer…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Galatians 5.2

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Today I did something different.  Instead of running a race for me, I ran it for others.  I was a pace setter for a local half marathon.  2:00 was the magic time.  I was to do my best to finish around the 2 hour mark. (which I did…2:00:20)  Pacers are put in place to help other achieve their goals.  During the race we are to keep a consistent pace and finish well around our time.

This was a totally new experience for me….one I didn’t think through totally when I signed up. 😉  I accepted this challenge with a few of my other running buddies.  We were ready to try something different for a change. 🙂  We all had a great time making new friends and running through the Chickamauga Battlefield.  It was beautiful morning to run…glorious fall foliage and amazing historic surroundings.

Pictures courtesy of the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon

One thing I didn’t think about when agreeing to do this was the immense responsibility I would feel once I lined up to the starting line.  I was there to put Proverbs 27.17 – As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another…in action.  Which, again I believe I did…but, and this is a big but…:)  I’m not sure I finished with the right attitude.  You all know this blog is about my ups and downs in running and in life.  I am going to be transparent here.

My goal was to cross the finish line as close to the 2:00 mark as possible.  That I did.  My goal was to encourage others along the way. That I did.  My goal was to stay steady and as consistent as possible…that I kind of did. 🙂  But, I never dreamed I would feel as I do now that it is over.  I guess it is because I am a people pleaser. I wanted all five who started with me to finish with me. I had one start and finish with me.  One finished ahead of us and the others I returned to the course and ran them in after I crossed the finish line.   They finished but not at their goal pace.  I felt as if I failed them.

Now, I am not reaching out for anything here…just stating where God took me today. After processing all of this in a cool down/stretch out jog,  I realized how hard it really was for me to let go of self.  God used this and will continue to use it I am sure.  As I pondered what I was feeling and thinking, I googled PUTTING OTHERS FIRST.  It led me to a sermon by Brian La Croix titled Putting Other First based on  Philippians 2.3-11:

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.  Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.  5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,  7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

SERMON:  The basic idea here is that we need to take our eyes off ourselves and put them on others.
When we’re filled with selfish ambition and vain conceit, we miss the needs of others that Paul tells us we’re supposed to be concerned with.  But when we consciously and intentionally look at others as being more important than we are, we start to shed that old skin of selfishness and self-importance.  You need to gain the right perspective on others – that they are more important than you.  We just talked a bit ago about the fact that selfishness and self-importance are not Christlike attitudes.

Jesus took His eyes of His own glory – glory He deserved and will deserve forever and ever.  He took His eyes off that and looked at what we needed.  That’s the example I want you to catch today. He took His eyes off his own glory and acted on the needs of other people.

Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to set aside your convenience, your preferences, your agenda for the sake of others?  Are you willing to be a living example of the love and priorities of Jesus? His example is worth imitating.  And not just the example of Jesus, but also His words. I think we’re all familiar with the Golden Rule from Matthew 7:12 –

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

I think it’s pretty clear – putting others first is what Jesus did, and we need to do the same thing.  For us to really put others first and bring unity for the Body of Christ, we need to be people who are surrendered completely to Christ.

The pacing job is one that puts the above scripture and sermon into action. You truly have to have a servant’s attitude.  You can’t be anxious for anything but in prayer take your requests to the Lord and ask for His help.

Philippians 4.6

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with

thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

You have to be ready to have some runners that have set lofty goals and fall back or others that go out really fast and then fall way back. You have to be prepared to run as if you are running for someone else…because you are.  They are first and your run does not count.  As long as you keep your focus on the goal set before you, then you will succeed.  Putting others first is the key.

I think I may have missed some of that today.  Not sure…:) I did have fun and we finished on pace.  So, why do I still feel weird about it? My mind was too wrapped up in the things…the worry of disappointing…the worry of starting too fast…the worry of not staying consistent…the worry of not making the 2 hour mark.  I need to let go and let God take those things so I could truly Pace for HIM! Sharing His love through scripture, sharing His love through encouragement…just sharing HIS love!

Will I do it again? Maybe.  If so, I will bathe it in prayer and go in it Putting Others First.

Thanks for reading today.  This blog is part of processing my crazy brain. 🙂  The soreness of the run is settling in and I am feeling the effects of the beautiful yet hilly course. 🙂

Now to end on a great note, the lady who started and finished with me…she was a running angel from Boston.  She came here to run and was so excited about the venue and the natural surroundings.  She is also a cancer and brain tumor survivor.  She sharpened me and made me realize in life we truly have to lean on one another, set goals that keep us going and focus on the one who we are here for – our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Still running blessed and learning every step of the way!

Trish

What Faith Can Do…

As I prepared to run my 20 miler this morning, I had a lot going through my mind.  There was a lot going through my brain before and during the run.  When you have 20 miles to run alone…things creep in telling you, you can’t do it.  If you aren’t careful, you start to believe it.  So, I tried to figure out how I could run with friends. My body said no.  Tired legs, tired spirit needed extra sleep.  Extra sleep won out.  But, resting an extra day also put the run off one more day. One more day gave me more time to contemplate 20 miles even longer.  This time it was a good thing. God showed me YES, I CAN even alone…b/c I wasn’t alone, I was with HIM!  I started feeling good about the run.  I anticipated it and turned my thinking into positive. It was going to be a great run. And it was!

Thankfully, I did have friends meet me to start the run.  We started with a prayer and off we went. They were there for moral/prayer support.  I needed it.  As I took off, I knew I would be on my own.  It was  a cool morning after the stormy night.  Great day to run.

My plan…run 7 or so miles from the dam along the Riverwalk to Coolidge Park.  Run a 5k race.  Then run 10 miles back to the car.  It helped tremendously to have a place to be in the middle of the run.  It also was helpful to know I had to be there at a certain time…I needed to keep a pace to make it. I did.

Once I got there…I waited maybe 5 minutes and ran into some more friends. We chatted and then the race started.  Now, remember I had 10 more miles to run back to the car…so this was not a race for me but a run. Cool thing was…I ended up coming in 2nd place in my age group not even trying. 🙂 Love it! Crazy!

During the run and specifically the 5k, the song below played several times. (when you are out there for 3 hours you hear songs several times…or maybe God just knew I needed to hear it.)  Tears filled my eyes a couple of times as I listened to the lyrics.  This song describes my journey to Boston…and my life verse:

Hebrews 11.1 – Now, faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

What Faith Can Do

Everybody Falls Sometimes
Gotta Find The Strength To Rise
From The Ashes And Make A New Beginning
Anyone Can Feel The Ache
You Think It’s More Than You Can Take
But You’re Stronger, Stronger Than You Know
Don’t You Give Up Now
The Sun Will Soon Be Shining
You Gotta Face The Clouds
To Find The Silver Lining

I’ve Seen Dreams That Move The Mountains
Hope That Doesn’t Ever End
Even When The Sky Is Falling
I’ve Seen Miracles Just Happen
Silent Prayers Get Answered
Broken Hearts Become Brand New
That’s What Faith Can Do

It Doesn’t Matter What You’ve Heard
Impossible Is Not A Word
It’s Just A Reason For Someone Not To Try
Everybody’s Scared To Death
When They Decide To Take That Step
Out On The Water
It’ll Be Alright
Life Is So Much More
Than What Your Eyes Are Seeing
You Will Find Your Way
If You Keep Believing

I’ve Seen Dreams That Move The Mountains
Hope That Doesn’t Ever End
Even When The Sky Is Falling
I’ve Seen Miracles Just Happen
Silent Prayers Get Answered
Broken Hearts Become Brand New
That’s What Faith Can Do

Overcome The Odds
You Don’t Have A Chance
(That’s What Faith Can Do)
When The World Says You Can’t
It’ll Tell You That You Can!

I’ve Seen Dreams That Move The Mountains
Hope That Doesn’t Ever End
Even When The Sky Is Falling
And I’ve Seen Miracles Just Happen
Silent Prayers Get Answered
Broken Hearts Become Brand New
That’s What Faith Can Do
That’s What Faith Can Do!
Even If You Fall Sometimes
You Will Have The Strength To Rise

I needed this today. I needed a reminder of who God is and how powerful He is! The sky looked like it was falling at times. I felt I could see the silver lining…then I realized I was living the silver lining.  God is sooo good. He is good all the time!  God helped me every step of the way. My run was GREAT! I felt like I could go on and on and on.  (that is how you want to feel after long mileage!!!)

God brought me here. He is not going to let me step on the road leading to Boston and not be ready.  He has helped my broken heart become brand new.  He gave me the strength to rise.  He gave me a team to get me through!!!  I have a team here and a team there…awesome.  God keeps His promises.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

He knew I would be in Boston.  He gave me the hope.  He gave me the desire.

This week I read the following scripture…it helped me as I ran today. I took part in His divine nature.

2 Peter 1:4

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

Then when I was resting at home He allowed me to do it again…

He delivered this week in ways I needed…as He promised. These scriptures sum it all up.

  • I needed REST – He provided.

Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  • I needed strength – He provided.

Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.

  • I needed success – He gave me an incredible run mentally and physically!

Philippians 4:19

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

God is faithful…just look what FAITH can do!!!

Running blessed and for HIM!

Trish 🙂

22 days and counting….
