Pacer…

Galatians 5.2

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Today I did something different.  Instead of running a race for me, I ran it for others.  I was a pace setter for a local half marathon.  2:00 was the magic time.  I was to do my best to finish around the 2 hour mark. (which I did…2:00:20)  Pacers are put in place to help other achieve their goals.  During the race we are to keep a consistent pace and finish well around our time.

This was a totally new experience for me….one I didn’t think through totally when I signed up. 😉  I accepted this challenge with a few of my other running buddies.  We were ready to try something different for a change. 🙂  We all had a great time making new friends and running through the Chickamauga Battlefield.  It was beautiful morning to run…glorious fall foliage and amazing historic surroundings.

One thing I didn’t think about when agreeing to do this was the immense responsibility I would feel once I lined up to the starting line.  I was there to put Proverbs 27.17 – As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another…in action.  Which, again I believe I did…but, and this is a big but…:)  I’m not sure I finished with the right attitude.  You all know this blog is about my ups and downs in running and in life.  I am going to be transparent here.

My goal was to cross the finish line as close to the 2:00 mark as possible.  That I did.  My goal was to encourage others along the way. That I did.  My goal was to stay steady and as consistent as possible…that I kind of did. 🙂  But, I never dreamed I would feel as I do now that it is over.  I guess it is because I am a people pleaser. I wanted all five who started with me to finish with me. I had one start and finish with me.  One finished ahead of us and the others I returned to the course and ran them in after I crossed the finish line.   They finished but not at their goal pace.  I felt as if I failed them.

Now, I am not reaching out for anything here…just stating where God took me today. After processing all of this in a cool down/stretch out jog,  I realized how hard it really was for me to let go of self.  God used this and will continue to use it I am sure.  As I pondered what I was feeling and thinking, I googled PUTTING OTHERS FIRST.  It led me to a sermon by Brian La Croix titled Putting Other First based on  Philippians 2.3-11:

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.  Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.  5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,  7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

SERMON:  The basic idea here is that we need to take our eyes off ourselves and put them on others.
When we’re filled with selfish ambition and vain conceit, we miss the needs of others that Paul tells us we’re supposed to be concerned with.  But when we consciously and intentionally look at others as being more important than we are, we start to shed that old skin of selfishness and self-importance.  You need to gain the right perspective on others – that they are more important than you.  We just talked a bit ago about the fact that selfishness and self-importance are not Christlike attitudes.

Jesus took His eyes of His own glory – glory He deserved and will deserve forever and ever.  He took His eyes off that and looked at what we needed.  That’s the example I want you to catch today. He took His eyes off his own glory and acted on the needs of other people.

Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to set aside your convenience, your preferences, your agenda for the sake of others?  Are you willing to be a living example of the love and priorities of Jesus? His example is worth imitating.  And not just the example of Jesus, but also His words. I think we’re all familiar with the Golden Rule from Matthew 7:12 –

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

I think it’s pretty clear – putting others first is what Jesus did, and we need to do the same thing.  For us to really put others first and bring unity for the Body of Christ, we need to be people who are surrendered completely to Christ.

The pacing job is one that puts the above scripture and sermon into action. You truly have to have a servant’s attitude.  You can’t be anxious for anything but in prayer take your requests to the Lord and ask for His help.

Philippians 4.6

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with

thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

You have to be ready to have some runners that have set lofty goals and fall back or others that go out really fast and then fall way back. You have to be prepared to run as if you are running for someone else…because you are.  They are first and your run does not count.  As long as you keep your focus on the goal set before you, then you will succeed.  Putting others first is the key.

I think I may have missed some of that today.  Not sure…:) I did have fun and we finished on pace.  So, why do I still feel weird about it? My mind was too wrapped up in the things…the worry of disappointing…the worry of starting too fast…the worry of not staying consistent…the worry of not making the 2 hour mark.  I need to let go and let God take those things so I could truly Pace for HIM! Sharing His love through scripture, sharing His love through encouragement…just sharing HIS love!

Will I do it again? Maybe.  If so, I will bathe it in prayer and go in it Putting Others First.

Thanks for reading today.  This blog is part of processing my crazy brain. 🙂  The soreness of the run is settling in and I am feeling the effects of the beautiful yet hilly course. 🙂

Now to end on a great note, the lady who started and finished with me…she was a running angel from Boston.  She came here to run and was so excited about the venue and the natural surroundings.  She is also a cancer and brain tumor survivor.  She sharpened me and made me realize in life we truly have to lean on one another, set goals that keep us going and focus on the one who we are here for – our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Still running blessed and learning every step of the way!

Thankful for the many blessings…(this is a long post…God has truly blessed me!)

As I read many of your thankful posts on Facebook, I am reminded of the blessings the Lord has bestowed on me. Instead of doing it daily, I decided to put all of them down in one place.  Several reasons…I will forget to post daily…I won’t remember what I have written from day-to-day(I’m getting old…)…I would love to see them all together. 🙂 So here we go…

1 – My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ – He died for my sins…His grace saved me knowing I was a sinner!

John3.17 ~ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

2 – The Living Word of God – my Bible – He has given us a road map for this journey we call life.  His message is one of salvation, mercy and grace.  He is with us always and His precepts are the road to follow.

Psalm 119.1-2 ~ Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord.Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.

3 – My family – The Lord blessed me with a God-fearing family – my mom, dad, brother and sister all love the Lord and have been an unbelievable source of support and encouragement my whole life.  I would not be where I am today without their love and their example! My nieces…they are like my own…I love them with my whole heart. My nephew-in-law…feels like he has been around since the girls…he is such an encouragement to all of us!  My grandparents – Dena and Daddy Dale, Grandmother and Granddaddy also helped shape me in my young informative years.  We were truly blessed as a family and still are….thank you Lord!

Deuteronomy 5:16 Honour your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

4 – My husband, Mike – God knew what He was doing when he led us together in such a crazy, fun way.  There is NO doubt He orchestrated this union.  Mike is my best friend. He is my rock. He is my numbers guy! He is the father of my kids. 🙂  He is the HARDEST worker I know.  He is my spiritual leader.  He is my everything on this earth.  My long and sometimes seems forever wait for him was well worth it.  We are experiencing life together in a way I could NEVER have predicted. I love the life the Lord has blessed us with…after living in 5 states and 1 other country…Tennessee is where my roots are growing deep. (Though I will forever be an Arkansas Razorback!)  Rockytop…you’ll always be…NO! I can’t do it. 🙂

Genesis 2.18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him

5 – My kids – what would I do without my kids. They are a source of joy unlike any other.  I am a mom, a grandmother and a mother-in-law.  All of them are uniquely made and formed by His hand.  I often say, God knew what He was doing when He brought me to them at an older age. 🙂  He prepared the way for me to be their mom.  I am so thankful I am able to experience the rest of my life with the joys of my life!!! I am a HAPPY mother of children…one’s that God picked for me!

Psalm 113.9 He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children.  Praise the Lord.

6 – My extended family – Once again I have been blessed with an amazing extended family.  The Newsom clan has accepted me as their own…even late in the game. They have surrounded me with love and acceptance since the get go.  They love the Lord and their lives show it.  I am blessed to be a NEWSOM!!! Coming from a rather small family I have been blessed with a large extended family added brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and on and on.  We have a great time and are fortunate to live close to most of them.  Fun is always had when we all get together!!!
Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
7 – My church – My blessings overflow at my church.  Rechoboth Baptist is a body of believers led by a man of God.  He preaches the Word of God and shepherds us to follow God’s precepts.  The people love one another and pray for one another.  I am blessed to call them friends!!!
Ephesians 2:19-22
19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
8 – My friends – What can I say, but…I have the best friends any person could ask for.   One benefit of living so many places is all of the life long friends I have made along the way.  My friends stretch from Arkansas to Texas to California to England to France to Georgia to New York and finally to Tennessee….and I am sure I am leaving one or two out.  They make me stronger. They make me better.  They are my angels all around!!!
Proverbs 27.17 As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
9 – My health – Most of you know, I run! I run to worship. I run to relieve stress. I run to fellowship with friends. I run for God.  My health has continued to allow me to stay active and enjoy the benefits.  I pray my health continues and I am able to be one of the old ladies crossing the finish line in a 5k before crossing the ultimate finish line in heaven.
Ephesians 2.10
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
10 – My job – Years ago, battling self-image issues and weight issues I chose to follow my passion into physical education and school counseling.  The jobs the Lord has provided me with over my career have all been very fulfilling for many reasons.  After years in the counseling field I was able to return to physical education and play once again.  Who would complain about wearing shorts, sweats and tennis shoes every day? Not me!! I work in a school of believers…another huge blessing.  We work together and we pray together.
Colossians 3:23-24
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
11 – My animals – Growing up I always wanted to be a vet.  I love animals.  Memories from growing up include many dogs, cats, hamsters, a cow, and now my 3 cats and two donkeys.  They bring me joy beyond measure.  They love me unconditionally!! I LOVE my animals!
Job 12:7-10
“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you. Speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea tell you. Every one of these knows that the hand of the Lord has done this. The life of every creature and the breath of all people are in God’s hand.” (NCV)
12 – My home – My childhood dream was to live on a farm with animals.  For a long time, I doubted this dream would come true.  God just had a different timetable than I did. I love the peaceful home I share with Mike.  We love nature and we are surrounded by God’s beauty.  My dreams came true.  🙂
Joshua 24:15
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
13 – 50+ years of marriage..My parents and my in-laws are example of what it takes to be married for the long haul.  They have put God first throughout the years.  They are both true examples of godly marriages.
Hosea 2:19
And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy.14 –  Trials and heartaches – Blessings have been numerous but so have troubles…but they were always blessings in disguise. I am who I am because of the hard times.  The times of waiting. The times of uncertainty. The times of distance.  The Lord used these to show me HE is faithful and will provide!!!
Romans 8.28 –

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

15 – Bible studies – These studies with the ladies at my church keep me centered, grounded and accountable.  I don’t know what I would do without HIS word and study that help me go deeper.

Psalm 119.15

I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.

16 – Nature – God brought me to Tennessee as my final stop and to establish me in my growing and rooting ground.  He knew what He was doing.  I worship best in nature…this is one reason I love to run. (I get to experience beautiful surroundings!) Tennessee is a blend of all the beauty I have experienced in all the places I have been fortunate to travel and or live. We have the mountains, the valleys, the water…an occasional beach and sometimes snow. 🙂

17 – Freedom – My freedoms to be able to write and speak freely about the things I love and things I believe!!!

Titus 2.7-8

in every way. Offer yourself as a role model of good actions. Show integrity, seriousness, and a sound message that is above criticism when you teach, so that any opponent will be ashamed because they won’t find anything bad to say about us.

18 – The United States of America – I am blessed to be an American.  Our freedoms and our liberties don’t come easy…I thank all of the men and women who have fought and are fighting for our freedoms.  We don’t thank you enough!  We live in a country founded on Christian principles.  We are free to express those and I am so very thankful!

Romans 13.1

Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

19 – College Football!!! Go Razorbacks Go! I love Fall when I can watch football and cheer for my favorite team! 🙂

20 –  The ocean – a place of serenity! A place of peace! A place where I see God’s mighty power at work…

Amos 9:6

Who builds his upper chambers in the heavens and founds his vault upon the earth; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth— the Lord is his name.

21 – Dreams – those that have been and are yet to come.  God has laid them on my heart…some have come true and some have not…as long as I stay in His will His dreams will work out for His glory!

Psalm 37.4

 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

22 – Small towns – a place to call home – Arkadelphia, Arkansas to Soddy Daisy, Tennessee – comfort, shelter, friends, fun!

23 – Travel – God’s people and God’s earth are phenomenal! Being able to travel and experience it has been just as special!! Loved my time gallivanting around and look forward to many more trips to see foreign lands.

24 – Photography – so blessed to be able to capture God’s incredible world on paper for a lasting memory!!

25 – My computer and my phone…I am thankful for the technologies of today.  Life is easier…but if I am not careful they can become a distraction! They both help me stay in touch in ways I never dreamed possible long ago.

26.2 – Marathons…The Pacific Shoreline-Huntington Beach(2x), Bermuda, London, Prague, San Diego, Tupelo and BOSTON – God used these marathons and training for each one in ways I could never have imagined. I learned more about myself, about God and about others each time around.  God performed miracles in Boston and will do it again in 2013.  I am thankful for every step that has helped me see how running for HIM enriches my life in ways beyond belief!!!!

Isaiah 40.29-30

He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

27 –  FAITH and HOPE – My life verse promises both…I couldn’t live without either!!!

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

29 – My running shoes…they take me miles and miles and miles.  They allow me to clear my head and run off my chocolate.

Hebrews 12.1

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

30 – My life – physical and eternal! God has blessed me with life now and forever!!

John 3:16 (KJV)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The Lord has blessed me beyond belief. I am not worthy but I am thankful!!!!

I will give HIM all the glory and pray others see His light around them.
