Oh what a difference a day can make…

The Lord is truly amazing.  At times I wonder why I think this, because…He is – God! The God of the impossible!  The God of grace! Our Creator and our Father!

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:25-27 (NIV)

He has transformed running into a spiritual tool.  Running, the thing that makes you wonder why in the world you are doing it…the thing that can cause injury…the thing that causes aches and pains…the thing that causes you to NOT get to sleep in on Saturday morning(by choice, of course)…the thing that causes you to CARE a whole lot about tennis shoes…I could go on and on…but you get my point. 🙂 I have grown so much over the past 6 months since I released my running to God.

Can you imagine if I could do this with everything? Now, don’t get me wrong…I struggle mightily daily with everything!!! But, if I can now apply what this running journey has been teaching me…I might finally get it.

Mike found a quote today that defines accomplishment. In my world, accomplishment is faithful living. Here it is:

There are four steps to accomplishment:
Plan purposefully.
Prepare prayerfully.
Proceed positively.
Pursue persistently.

So, as the title says…oh what a difference a day can make…yesterday at this time I had just struggled with worry about running in the BIG race…a race we see as the “holy grail” in running. I thought I had let it go and let God have it…but I hadn’t.  Now after processing it all and being just a day away…I am at peace and I am content because:

1 Corinthians 1:26-30

 26 For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28 and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, 29 so that no man may boast before God. 30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”

The Lord gave me the talent and desire to run.  He gave me the desire to try for Boston and to:

Plan purposefully.
Prepare prayerfully.
Proceed positively.
Pursue persistently.

Now to put Run For God’s theme verse into play:

Hebrews 12. 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…

Continue to move forward in my efforts to give for Him and to others while using the talent and desire He gave me while on this earth.

Acts 20.35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Salt and light…the almost final answer…

Salt and Light - tiles

Dear Trish:

Thank you for submitting your application for entry into the 2012 Boston Marathon. Regrettably, we are unable to accept your application due to field size limitations and the large number of applications we received from qualified runners.

Name of Applicant Gender Age on
4-16-2012
Submitted
Qualifying Time
Trish Newsom F 43 3:48:59

Entries from applicants in your age group were accepted through and including the time 3:48:46. (13 seconds shy…13 seconds!)

So…that is where we are…13 seconds shy of running the 2012 Marathon with the “qualified” group.  In preparation for this day I start collecting scriptures and one quote that I knew would encourage and comfort at the same time…here they are:

Don’t count the steps ahead; just add up the total of steps already covered, and multiply it by faith, confidence, and endurance. Always remember that for those who persist, today’s dreams are transformed into tomorrow’s successes.”~ Kelly D. Caron

Pslam 66.19-20

19 but God has surely listened
and heard my voice in prayer.

20 Praise be to God,
who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!

John 15.7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.

Hebrews11.6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Psalm 62

5 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.

6 He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

7 My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.

8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

During the day today, I was struggling.  I text some of my family and friends and asked them to pray for peace.  Yoli…my tried and true running buddy, called me back and said, “Can we pray?”  She prayed the sweetest prayer.  She spoke the words I could not.  She asked for His will to be done…and let Him know our desires. But she ended by praying His glory being shown in all of this.  You all know this has been my prayer all along.  Then my sister, Lisa text me the following scripture:

John 11:40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

At this time I also put in my headphones to try to process peace with some Christian music.  I currently had the station on Easy Listening.  But to my surprise, the Lord had His song on the Easy Listening station for me…I Surrender All – God put this song on that station at the very moment I needed it!!!!

He was orchestrating peace through far away prayer by many of you, direct prayer by Yoli, scripture sent by my sister and then His song on the radio.  I was listening!

This all prepared me for the above email.  The one that says we appreciate your effort but you missed it by 13 seconds. But did I? NO! I qualified.  And as Hebrews 12.1 states…

Hebrews 12

 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

That race is the 2012 Boston Marathon…so as of right now, I am researching and applying to run for a charity.  How incredible would it be to run as a qualifier…AND to run to help others in a way I would not running solo?  My husband is fired up.  After being disappointed with me and for me he realized we could do this.  We could still run and do it for others!!! My goal is to apply to be part of the Alzheimer’s Association charity team.  Being that Tennessee is God’s chosen home for me…and that Pat Summit is the new face for this disease, she would be the drive behind this effort.  She is a lady of integrity who has not given up…she is the face for perseverance.  My grandmother also suffered from dementia.  This disease is close to many close to all of us.

This is also being done for my incredible nephew, Connor. I have learned so much from him in regards to giving. Connor and his family have benefitted from the Ronald McDonald House Charity during his battle with Aplastic Anemia. He is collecting tab tops to raise funds for the RMH charity. (If this was a chosen charity for Boston, I would be all over it…but unfortunately, it is not.)  He is teaching all of us what it means to give selflessly even in the midst of struggles.  Connor, you make us proud to know you and to be able to call you family. You and your family have taught all of us the meaning of the following scripture:

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. “Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Stay tuned for this update…if this is not what God has planned…then I will keep moving forward and praying for His will in regards to my running.  Let’s continue to…not count the steps ahead; just add up the total of steps already covered, and multiply it by faith, confidence, and endurance. Always remember that for those who persist, today’s dreams are transformed into tomorrow’s successes.”~ Kelly D. Caron

Blessings have been numerous throughout this process. Friendships have been formed.  Prayers have answered.  Spiritual growth has been present.  Goals have been met.  This is just the start of the journey to the next mailbox….

Praying game continues…Monday or Tuesday final answer

Running by faith and on prayer!

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you. (Luke 17:5, 6 NIV)

It’s a praying game…

Boston Marathon 2008

Image by Christopher S. Penn via Flickr

1 John 5:14-15

14  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

16  Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Life is a praying game..or at least it should be!  This week I am finding out all I can do is pray.  Physically, I have done all I can do.  I successfully registered for the Boston Marathon on Monday.  I was given a submission number and now it is a praying game!  Throughout this week everyone who qualified can register.  After the close of registration on Friday at 10:00 pm, they will sort us out by fastest times. Fastest runners in and the others are still Boston Qualifiers! We will receive an email either way after 10pm Friday evening.

So, this brings back the subject of being still and waiting. 🙂

Psalm 46:10

10 “Be still, and know that I am God..”

I am hopeful and I am at peace.  We know that nothing is impossible with God…if He wants me there…I will be there.  If not, that is ok!

Mark 10:27

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

The next post will reveal the answer to the big question…Am I running the 2012 Boston Marathon?

God willing I will! If His will is NO…then there is something better! Amen!

One more week…faith in action!

Hebrews 11.1 – 1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

From the Boston Marathon Facebook Page:  Week One of registration for the 2012 Boston Marathon is now closed. For Week Two, anyone who has met their qualifying time may submit an application for entry beginning Monday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. ET and continuing through Friday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. ET. Entry is NOT first come, first served, and accepted entrants will be informed at the conclusion of this period. The official website to register is www.baa.org

Now, I have to put Hebrews 11.1 into action.  I must have faith that all will work out as the Lord would have it to work out.  God willing I will be one of those that get in next week. As this reads…I will not know until next Friday. Praying it will happen…Totally okay if it does not…because I met my goal! I am a BQ!

Psalm 37.4 – Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Phil. 4:6  – Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

My Lord has heard my prayer and knows my heart.  ALL things will work out according to HIS precious will!

Thank you Lord for loving me so…thank you in advance for your choice of whether I run or not at Boston.  I trust in You and have faith in YOU!

Walking (at the moment) blessed!

Trish

Injury report – also trusting that the Lord is with the doctor on Wednesday.  I go visit a runner friendly doctor to see about my foot issues. Pray all goes well!  Thanks to you all for your support during this fun, faith filled process!

Be Still and Know that I am God!…(race stats)

Thenextmailboxboston is still alive and well! This journey has become a spiritual one for me in a way I never dreamed. I know I have said that in another post…but it was worth saying again.  As our guest pastor said today, “We were born to bring God glory!”  I for one never dreamed running would factor into that equation for me…but it has.  God intended it that way!

My Bible is one of my most prized possessions.  (sidebar:  My dear friend, Michelle gave it to me over 20 years ago.  The Lord allowed Michelle to enter my life at the great age of 2! So, she has the great distinction of being the friend I have known the longest! Anyway…with that being said, Michelle has been and will always be a spiritual mentor to me.  She taught me a long time ago not to be afraid to write in my Bible.  This was when we were teenagers.  She also introduced me to Michael W. Smith…wow! Christian music has come so far since then, hasn’t it? These two things have been instrumental in my life and my running for years.  I am not sure I could ever thank her enough!)

Back to it…my Bible is also my prayer journal.  I have always made notes to myself about what God is saying to me.  I usually date it…not always, but usually.  I am always thankful when I do.  This way I can go back and see how God has always been faithful. (sidebar: I have another friend who told my husband she was going to come for the Bible one day. ;o))

Today during our church service, I flipped to Habakkuk 2.3-4, 3.17-19 and Hebrews 12.1-2.  All three scriptures have “June 5, 2011 – BQ -No” and “Sept. 4, 2011- BQ ?” written next to them.  It gave me pure joy to write next to each one -“YES! PTL!” (Praise the Lord!)

The scriptures read:

Habakkuk 2.3-4

3For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come and will not delay.

4“See, he is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous will live by his faith—

The Lord had an appointed time for my qualifying moment. He knew when He would receive the most glory. This time! I had to wait for it. The Lord truly used those three months to form and shape my mind, heart and soul. Thank you Lord!

Habakkuk 3.17-19

17 Though the fig tree does not bud

and there are no grapes on the vines,

though the olive crop fails

and the fields produce no food,

though there are no sheep in the pen

and no cattle in the stalls,

18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,

I will be joyful in God my Savior.

19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;

he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,

he enables me to go on the heights.

The Lord was truly my strength that day and He was my strength. He made my feet like that of deer and enabled me to go to new heights.(stats to follow and you will see this is so very true!)

Hebrews 12.1-2

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I was surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and he enabled me to throw everything off (first run with nothing but me…no music…no fuel belt for 2nd half…just my prayers, God’s presence and me!)

God is so good.  He is so faithful.  My joy came as I crossed the finish line knowing I had done it…Knowing I had a multitude of prayers getting me to the end.  Knowing I truly worked hard to do what He wanted…and know I am not done.  I am going to keep on running for Him.

Boston update:  Fast runners get to register this week.  Registration opens Monday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m.  It is open all week for those 20 minutes faster….10 minutes faster and then 5 minutes faster.  I do not fall into any of these categories so I will have to wait until 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19.  God willing I will have a spot waiting on me that morning.  If not, that is OK! I accomplished my goal and now I will trust in Him no matter what! (Habakkuk 2.3 and Pslam 37.7 – Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.)
The journey is not over…continue to enjoy the ride that the Lord provides!
Running Blessed!
Trish
Oh, I feel great! My muscles and mind have recovered nicely.  My heel on the other hand is tired of pounding pavement.  I am resting one more week.  Bike riding is all I can do at this time. :o) Is it hard? Yes, I have been running almost everyday for 3 months…I am itching to get out there again. But, my body says rest.  I need to listen! So, I am!

Psalm 37:7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.
Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God.

To God be the Glory….Great things He hath done! (update…)

The HUG for the BQ!

To God be the Glory for today’s run! He was there every step of the way! We did it!

We qualified for Boston!  God, Yoli and I ran Tupelo, Mississippi country roads together today!  Yoli and I started out fast…of course.We kept a great pace through the 1/2 way point.  Around mile 14 I was on my own to experience the light of the morning alone with my thoughts and prayers.  I ran this marathon with NO distractions…no music.

I heard things  I hadn’t heard.  I felt things I hadn’t felt. I ran in a way I hadn’t run! I did it!

Here is the rundown:

God showed up first with Mike’s prayer of protection to lead us off on the right foot.

Secondly, God showed up with the fellow runners we met along the way.

~Dwayne from Tupelo

~OSU Cowboy with an African accent

~Two ladies from Bolivar, TN running to qualify for Boston

~The numerous runners wishing us good luck and saying good job once we made the turn around at 13.

~The race director who gave me a hug once he realized I qualified for Boston in his race.

~The fellow Arkansans running along side me as well as keeping Mike company.  He found a friend and it turns out I ran with her during a training run in Hot Springs over the summer…didn’t even know! How cool is that??

Thirdly, God showed up with the sights and sounds.  This was a great country course. We had everything on this run we normally do on our training runs. The only thing we missed was a donkey greeting us with “Hee Haw!”   We had the horses,the water, my car…(Mike drove to the half way point after a McDonald’s breakfast), the rolling hills, the hay fields.  We also heard the other runners. Their feet hitting the ground.  No music opens up a whole new world. 🙂  I had a head lamp attached to my belt at the beginning so we ran in a pack to start off. My light (or His light) led the way for many.

Finally God showed up with answered prayers…misting rain for 2 1/2 hours of the 3:48…pouring rain from tropical storm Lee started coming down the last 2 miles…just to mix things up! Great weather for the most part.  He provided a great running partner, Yoli Bell. She continued to guide me with her words and her encouragement. God provided strength through prayers from you all from Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina…maybe more. I felt them…especially mile 17 on…my legs did not want to go on…so your prayers helped me each step of the way!  And finally…

I QUALIFIED…I ran across the finish line to meet my husband in a bear hug with a THUD! As soon as his arms went around me, my legs buckled.  I was soooo tired and soooo excited I couldn’t stand.  He was my target! I hit it! Woo hoo! My official time was 3:48:59.  I finished 2nd in my age group…in a marathon! I finished 8th overall women…in a marathon! Granted…it was a smaller one…but I did it!!! Thank you Lord!

As I ran the last 12 alone…I had many of your words of encouragement rolling through my head.  We passed a church with 2 Chronicles 7-14 listed on its marquee.   “He is good; his love endures forever.” 2 Chronicles 7.3b. His love and strength endures forever and carried me through.

Thank you to everyone who has followed this journey.  The Boston qualifying mailbox was passed in a great way today! 3 minutes better than my run in June.  Now, I am at the mercy of the Boston Marathon admission process.  I qualified so close to the cut off time I will have to wait until day 7 to register.  This can only happen IF there are spots open.  So, this means that though I qualified, I may not get into 2012 Boston.  You have to re-qualify every year.  We will take this journey one step at a time as well.  God willing I will run 2012 Boston…if not I am still a Boston Qualifier! To God Be the glory..GREAT things HE hath done!!!

Hebrews 12.1-2

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

To God Be the Glory

Text: Fanny J. Crosby  Music: William H. Doane

To God be the glory, great things he hath done!

So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,

who yielded his life an atonement for sin,

and opened the lifegate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,

and give him the glory, great things he hath done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,

to every believer the promise of God;

the vilest offender who truly believes,

that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,

and give him the glory, great things he hath done!

Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done,

and great our rejoicing thru Jesus the Son;

but purer, and higher, and greater will be

our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,

and give him the glory, great things he hath done!

My 2nd place in age group plaque!
